01 Phuket
The Life
Phuket is Thailand’s most internationally mature island. It is not a retreat from the world — it is a world in itself. From the sophisticated beach club scene of Bang Tao and Kamala to the quiet coves of Nai Harn and Rawai, the island offers dramatically different lifestyles within a 45-minute drive of each other. Morning yoga on your private
terrace, afternoon paddleboarding in crystal Andaman waters, sunset cocktails at a cliff-top bar, and dinner at a
restaurant that would hold its own in Paris or Tokyo. This is the daily rhythm Phuket makes possible.
Beaches for Every Mood: Bang Tao for chic beach clubs and flat-water watersports. Kamala for elegant calm. Kata and Karon forsurf and family days. Nai Harn and Rawai for peace and yachting culture.
Water Sports & Marine Life: World-class scuba diving and snorkelling around the Similan Islands, Phi Phi, and Racha islands. Yachting, kite-surfing, Muay Thai, and championship golf at Red Mountain and Loch Palm.
Wellness & Active Living: Sunrise beach meditation at Nai Harn. Morning yoga at Cherng Talay. Padel, tennis, and cycling clubs thriving. The island’s gym and fitness scene rivals any major city.
Dining & Nightlife
Phuket’s food and social scene is one of the most diverse in Southeast Asia. Bang Tao’s Catch Beach Club and Café del Mar deliver full-day beach club experiences with international DJs, poolside dining, and craft cocktails. For dining, the island offers everything from fresh seafood on the beach at Rawai to refined Thai cuisine and Japanese omakase counters in Cherng Talay. Phuket Old Town’s Sino-Portuguese streets are lined with artisan coffee shops, galleries, and award-winning restaurants. The nightlife spectrum runs from the notorious Bangla Road in Patong to rooftop wine bars in the quieter corners of Kamala.
Resort Spas: Trisara, Rosewood Phuket, and Anantara all operate world-class spa sanctuaries — treatment suites overlooking the sea, six-handed massage rituals, hydrotherapy facilities.
Wellness Culture: The Bangtao and Cherng Talay corridor has become Phuket’s wellness hub — organic cafés, Pilates studios, meditation centres, and detox programmes side by side.
Medical Tourism: A growing medical tourism industry. Bumrungrad’s new hospital opens in Cherng Talay in 2026, joining Bangkok Hospital Phuket — JCI-accredited with English-speaking specialists. Expat Practicalities
Healthcare: Bangkok Hospital Phuket — JCI-accredited (gold standard), 400-bed facility, comprehensive specialties, English-speaking staff. Phuket International Hospital and Mission Hospital also serve the community. World-class care on the island; Bangkok an hour away for tertiary needs.
International Schools: British International School Phuket (BISP) — elite sports, IB curriculum. UWC Thailand — global IB focus. HeadStart International School — strong academics, accessible fees. KIS International School. Options from nursery through A-levels on the island.
Daily Life in Phuket
Villa management companies, concierge services, imported supermarkets (Villa Market, Tops), and a vast expat community
make daily life seamless. French, German, Russian, British, Australian, and Scandinavian communities are all
well-established. The island has full urban infrastructure — banks, legal services, insurance, co-working spaces, and a
reliable road network.
02 Koh Samui
The Life
Koh Samui operates at a different frequency to Phuket. Smaller, quieter, more intimate — yet fully equipped for a luxury lifestyle. The island is the undisputed wellness capital of the Gulf of Thailand, and its European visitor dominance (56% of arrivals in 2024 from Germany, UK, and France) means its restaurants, services, and social scene are finely tuned to a discerning, quality-focused clientele. Fisherman’s Village in Bophut captures the island’s character perfectly: string-lit streets, boutique galleries, world-class Thai and international restaurants, and the most civilised Friday Night Walking Street in Thailand.
Beaches for Every Lifestyle: Snorkelling and diving to Koh Tao (one of the world’s top dive destinations, just 1.5 hrs away). Island hopping to Koh Phangan. Two championship golf courses. Sailing charters and speedboat day trips.
Water Sports & Island Adventures: Koh Samui is the gateway to some of Thailand’s best marine experiences. Snorkelling and diving trips to Koh Tao are among the most popular activities, while island-hopping excursions to Koh Phangan and Ang Thong Marine Park offer endless opportunities for exploration. Sailing charters, speedboat trips, and championship golf courses add to the island’s outdoor appeal.
Wellness & Fitness: Kamalaya Wellness Sanctuary — consistently ranked among the world’s finest wellness retreats. Vikasa Yoga on the beach. A thriving fitness culture with gyms, Muay Thai, and holistic health practitioners.
Dining & Social Life
Koh Samui’s dining scene punches well above its size. Fisherman’s Village in Bophut offers a concentration of excellent restaurants — Thai, French, Italian, and contemporary fusion — in a beautifully atmospheric setting. For the beach club experience, Nikki Beach on the sunset side of Lipa Noi brings its signature global energy to the island. Banyan Tree Samui’s restaurants, the Four Seasons’ beachfront dining, and Centara Reserve’s colonial elegance set the high-end benchmark. Across the island, fresh seafood grilled on the beach remains one of life’s simplest and most satisfying pleasures.
Kamalaya Wellness Sanctuary: One of the world’s most awarded wellness resorts. Set in a former monk’s cave on a hillside above a private bay, Kamalaya offers comprehensive detox, stress management, and longevity programmes. Year-round clientele with average stays of 7–14 days.
The Wellness Culture: Beyond Kamalaya, the island offers Vikasa Yoga’s beachfront teacher training retreats, Banyan Tree Spa’s hydrotherapy Rainforest facility, and a thriving community of independent wellness practitioners, nutritionists, and holistic therapists.
Healthcare: Bangkok Hospital Samui (BDMS network, 24/7 emergency care, English-speaking specialists), Bandon International Hospital, Samui International Hospital, and Thai International Hospital. Five international hospitals on an island of 200 km² — exceptional provision for its size.
International Schools: International School of Samui (ISS) — British curriculum, Cambridge IGCSE and A-Levels, nursery to Year 13, 300
students from 35 countries. Panyadee British International School. Greenacre International School (primary). Lamai International School. Tight-knit school communities. Windfield International School (Fr – Eng).

03 Koh Phangan
The Life
Koh Phangan has outgrown its Full Moon Party reputation to become one of Southeast Asia’s most sought-after destinations for conscious, quality-focused living. The island’s interior is dense jungle. Its western coast at Srithanu has evolved into a village of yoga shalas, organic cafés, and creative studios that feels more like a curated wellness community than a beach resort. The north at Chaloklum is all fishing village charm and spectacular sunsets. The Full Moon Party still happens at Haad Rin — drawing 30,000 revellers monthly — but it barely touches the island’s quieter, more intentional day-to-day character.
Beaches: Haad Yao and Haad Salad on the west for calm, shallow turquoise waters. Thong Nai Pan Noi in the north for dramatic beauty. Bottle Beach (accessible only by boat or trail) for seclusion. Srithanu for the sunset ritual.
Water & Adventure: Excellent snorkelling and freediving around Koh Ma in the north. Scuba diving close to Koh Tao. Jungle hiking trails to Domrock waterfall and the island’s summit. Scooter explorations of the interior.
Wellness & Events: Yoga classes and teacher training programmes run year-round, particularly at Srithanu. Agama Yoga, a globally respected school, is based here. Meditation retreats, sound healing, and plant medicine ceremonies attract a global wellness community.
Dining & Community Life
Koh Phangan’s food scene reflects its community perfectly. At Srithanu and Baan Tai, raw vegan cafés, organic smoothie bars, and plant-based restaurants sit alongside outstanding traditional Thai food. The island has attracted French and European chefs who have opened small, excellent restaurants — croque monsieurs and duck confit alongside the pad thai and fresh papaya salads. Thong Sala, the main town, is the functional heart — markets, pharmacies, hardware stores, and a lively street food scene. The Sunday market at Chaloklum is a particular highlight: local produce, handmade goods, and the island’s creative community in one place.
Healthcare: Koh Phangan has a government hospital and several private clinics. For serious medical needs, Bangkok Hospital Samui is 30 minutes away by ferry, and the full hospital infrastructure of Koh Samui is readily accessible. Most long-term residents maintain good international health insurance.
Schools & Daily Life: No dedicated international school on the island — families with school-age children typically enrol at ISS on Koh Samui (30 min by ferry) or choose homeschooling. A growing community of expat families finds the island’s outdoor lifestyle an exceptional environment for children. Daily essentials well-covered in Thong Sala.
Who Lives in Koh Phangan?
The island is home to a remarkably diverse long-stay community: yoga teachers, writers, designers, startup founders, therapists, and artists from across Europe, North America, Russia, and Israel. Many stay for months or years. The community is intentional, welcoming, and unusually well-educated. For those who value a life built around meaning and connection over convenience and consumption, Koh Phangan delivers something genuinely rare.
04 Krabi
The Life
Krabi is for the adventurer, the nature-lover, and the person who finds beauty in dramatic landscapes rather than polished sophistication. The province’s defining features — towering karst cliffs, mangrove forests, and islands of impossible beauty — shape a lifestyle that is fundamentally outdoor and active. Ao Nang is the practical hub, with good restaurants, cafés, and amenities within walking distance of the beach. Railay Beach — accessible only by longtail boat — is one of the world’s most spectacular places to spend a day. Koh Lanta, within the province, offers a quieter, more sophisticated long-stay alternative.
Iconic Beaches: Railay Beach — accessible only by sea, framed by vertical limestone walls. Ao Nang for convenience and energy. Klong Muang and Tubkaak for seclusion and resort luxury. The Four Islands for day trips and snorkelling.
Adventure Sports: Railay is a world-famous rock climbing destination — international climbers make it a pilgrimage. Kayaking through mangrove caves. Scuba diving and freediving around Koh Lanta and Koh Phi Phi. Tiger Cave Temple — 1,260 steps to a summit with extraordinary views.
Nature & Exploration: Khao Nor Chu Chi lowland forest — one of Thailand’s last remaining habitats for the Gurney’s pitta bird. Emerald Pool and Blue Pool natural hot springs. Night kayaking to see bioluminescence. Khao Sok National Park within day-trip range.
Dining & Culture
Krabi Town is a genuine local Thai city with a thriving night market scene that showcases the authentic food culture of southern Thailand — fresh seafood, Muslim-influenced curries, roti with condensed milk, and coconut milk desserts. Ao Nang’s restaurant strip covers international cuisine from Italian to Indian, with quality improving steadily as the destination attracts more discerning visitors. The wellness café culture is growing — yoga studios, juice bars, and retreat centres are increasingly common. Krabi offers a life that still feels genuinely Thai, rather than an international resort veneer over a local reality.
Healthcare: Krabi has its own private hospitals and clinics for day-to-day needs. For specialist care, Phuket — with its JCI-accredited Bangkok Hospital and full range of medical specialists — is approximately 2.5 hours by road or a short flight. International health insurance recommended for long-term residents.
Schools & Daily Life: No international school in Krabi itself, though the Phuket international school network is accessible for families committed to the destination. Daily life infrastructure is good — modern supermarkets, Central Krabi (opened 2025), fresh markets, and a growing range of international services in Ao Nang.
Who Lives in Krabi?
Krabi’s long-stay community is smaller and younger than Phuket or Samui — adventure sports instructors, dive masters, yoga teachers, and creative entrepreneurs who chose the landscape over infrastructure. A growing wave of international property buyers is beginning to arrive ahead of the airport expansion. The destination rewards those who value authenticity and natural beauty, and who are comfortable with a life that still requires occasional effort to navigate.
05 Nakhon Si Thammarat
The Life
Nakhon Si Thammarat offers something that every other destination in this guide no longer can: total, genuine undiscovery. The province’s Gulf Coast beaches — Sichon, Khanom, and Nai Phlao — stretch for kilometres without a beach club, a tour boat, or a crowd. The local culture is alive and intact — traditional silk weaving villages, nang talung shadow puppet performances, and ancient Buddhist temples that have stood for 2,000 years. Pink dolphins swim in Khanom Bay. The food is exceptional — southern Thai cuisine at its most authentic, cooked by people who have never had reason to adapt it for foreign palates. For the right buyer, this is the most precious lifestyle proposition in South Thailand.
The Beaches: Sichon Beach — a long, clean stretch of white sand with a backdrop of casuarina trees, virtually empty outside Thai holidays. Khanom — famous for pink dolphins visible from the shore. Nai Phlao and Kho Khwang — hidden coves of extraordinary beauty.
Nature & Culture: Namtok Yong National Park — jungle waterfalls and hiking trails within an hour of the coast. Ancient Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan — one of Thailand’s most important Buddhist temples, over 1,000 years old. Traditional silk-weaving villages. Local artisan chocolate producers.
Water & Activities: Gulf of Thailand kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding on calm, unpolluted waters. Pink dolphin watching at Khanom. Cycling along the long, flat coastal roads. Yoga and meditation in a landscape of total quiet. Boat transfers to Koh Samui in 45 minutes.
Dining & Local Culture
The food in Nakhon Si Thammarat is a revelation for those who know Thai cuisine. Southern Thai cooking is a distinct tradition — more complex spicing, heavy use of fresh turmeric, galangal, and coconut milk, abundant fresh seafood caught daily just offshore. The province’s markets are outstanding — early morning fish markets, organic chocolate producers, and the kind of fresh produce that urban Thailand imports from here. International dining options are limited but growing — the arrival of Banyan Tree Residences Sichon signals the beginning of a new tier of hospitality in the region. For those who embrace local culture rather than seek to replicate their home country, this is paradise.
Healthcare: Nakhon Si Thammarat City has well-equipped provincial hospitals. The province benefits from proximity to three international airports, with Surat Thani, Krabi, and Phuket all within range for specialist care. The ฿1.46 billion airport upgrade is improving connectivity for medical access as well as tourism.
Schools & Daily Life: No international schools in the province at this stage. Families typically access Koh Samui’s international schools via the 45-minute boat connection, or choose to base in Khanom for weekdays and travel to Samui for school. The pioneering community here are those building a new lifestyle, not joining an established one.
Who Should Consider Nakhon Si Thammarat?
Early movers. Property investors with a 5–10 year horizon. Those who want to wake up to an empty beach and live at the pace Thailand once offered everywhere. Buyers who understand that the Koh Samui bridge, once complete, will land at Khanom — the mainland terminus — and are positioning accordingly. People who value authenticity, tranquility, and the extraordinary returns that come from being first.
This is more than a property. It is a life
